Fit, experienced hikers are invited to join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Friday, Oct. 4 for a challenging but rewarding out-and-back hike from Yellow Mountain Gap to Big Hump Mountain. This grassy-bald peak offers tremendous, 360-degree views, and fall colors should be at their peak.

The hike is 8.6 miles overall, including a section on the historic Overmountain Victory Trail - trod by Revolutionary War troops in the 1700s - but also includes several steep ascents and some rugged sections. Only the sure-footed and fit should participate.

Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Rose’s Shopping Center parking lot in Burnsville on the corner overlooking US Highway 19-E. The group will take a Yancey County Transportation van - a $5 per rider donation is requested - and the trip to the trailhead will take about 1 hour, each way.

Bring lunch, snacks, water, hiking poles if you use them and clothes that will keep you warm and dry - check the weather forecast! You might also bring insect repellent. The hike should take about 5 hours.

Hikers must contact Hike Leader Jimmie Bowen at Jimmie@nchighpeaks.org or 252-450-5224 to reserve a seat on the van and to let him know you will attend.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to the weather.
