Experienced, fit hikers are invited to join N.C. High Peaks for a challenging hike over Blackstock Knob near Mt. Mitchell on Friday, July 7. This high-elevation jaunt should provide an escape from hot summer temperatures, along with wonderful views.
The 5-mile hike will start at NC 128 and end at Walker Knob Overlook, traveling along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. It includes a climb and descent of about 1,000 feet over a rough trail with challenging stone steps.
This hike counts toward the High Peaks Black Mountain Hiking Challenge. For more information, visit the club’s website, listed below.
Hikers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Ridge Junction Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mile Marker 355 and the NC 128 junction. The group will carpool to the hike starting and ending points.
Bring lunch, snacks, plenty of water, rain gear if it looks threatening and hiking poles if you use them. Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike, although you may have to provide your own transportation.
