To celebrate the arrival of Spring, the NC High Peaks Trail Association will partner with Mt. Mitchell State Park to offer two invigorating hikes on Friday, March 15.
The easier hike will start at 11 a.m. and consist of a 2-mile out-and-back from the summit to Mt. Craig. This hike is rated as moderate-to-strenuous and does involve scrambling up and down some rock faces and a steep set of rock steps.
The tougher hike of 6 very strenuous miles starts at 9 a.m. and will be a loop around the park that involves steep climbs, scrambling over bare rock faces and most likely dealing with patches of ice. Only experienced hikers should attempt this adventure!
Both hikes will start at the gift shop at the summit. Bring warm clothes, rain gear (just in case!), snacks, plenty of water, good boots and hiking poles. The longer hike will take up to 6 hours, so bring lunch for that one.
Hikers must register for either hike by contacting Ranger Mandy Blake at: mandy.blake@ncparks.gov.
Please note that the only bathrooms and water available are at the park office, found on the right after you enter the park, so make a pit stop before we start! Neither of these hikes are considered easy, and may be cancelled due to weather.
Check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for a cancellation notice if the forecast is doubtful.
